Exploration of Art

Students will be introduced to various materials and art supplies. This course focuses on various forms of art, including printmaking, drawing, collage, and painting. Students will be exposed to the elements of art, focusing on the use of color, line, shape, and texture. This is designed to be a fun and explorative. This class is perfect for students interested in a broad art-making experience. Group work and critiques will be incorporated.

The Science of Art *NEW*

In this class, kids will create paint from their natural ingredients as well as learn how to use them. They will be introduced to various different materials and art supplies and explore the usage of colors. This is designed to be a fun and explorative. If you are interested in art in its many mediums or if you just want to explore the art world, join us! Group work and critiques will be incorporated.

Manga Character Design Camp

Students will create your own character influenced by the Japanese art of Manga. They will learn how to visually tell their character’s story after studying classic story arc techniques and practices, including storyboarding. Students will experiment with the Manga character elements such as various facial expressions, movement of lines and thoughtful use of text graphics. Students will learn figure proportion and composition while designing their own fun story.

Computer Graphics

This class is created for students to explore design in the world of computer graphics. By combining fine arts skills and computer programs, students will learn how to create digital art. Classroom dynamics will include individual as well as group work. Students will develop critical thinking and technical skills through exercises designed to strengthen visual communication skills. Students will learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Basic computer knowledge is recommended.

Painting with the Masters *NEW*

Painting with the Masters is designed to expose students to various art movements and the prominent artists that made them happen. Three separate courses offer different perspectives and theories on the purpose and act of making art. Students will complete works of art influenced by the various theories and techniques of a period of their choice. Impressionism will focus on artists that include Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet, exploring their use of paint, line and color. Cubism will include a discussion on the 20th century art movement that included artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse. A study in Modernism will include theories and practices surrounding the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Jackson Pollock, Piet Mondrian and other artists of the mid-late 20th century.

Junior Fashion Design

For young artists who are interested in fashion design. In this hands-on course, students will enjoy a chance to explore the fundamental points of fashion design through designing a collection and fabricating a garment that they can wear. Students will examine fashion as a form of expression in 2-D and 3-D. Students will also acquire basic color sense, three-dimensional concept, patterning and sketching skills, including figure proportions with an emphasis on fashion poses. The class culminates in a fashion show in which students talk about their theories and designs using the vocabulary of the fashion world. Prior sewing experience is helpful but not necessary.

Sculptural Exploration

This course explores expressive and technical approaches through a variety of 3-Dimensional materials. This class is perfect for students looking to use their hands and interact with art on a physical level. Students will strengthen their fabrication skills as well as develop their own ideas by solving conceptual challenges with creativity and design. Influential sculptural artists and theories will also be discussed and applied to their work. Students will learn to discuss 3-D art using sculptural vocabulary. Materials will include clay, textiles and found objects.

College Portfolio

This is an intensive class designed for high school and college transfer students who plan on applying for admission to college or university art programs and/or art and design schools which require a complete portfolio as part of the application process. Students will produce art pieces for their portfolio and will be provided individual consultations to plan a portfolio strategy. The course will also offer productive critiques of their art pieces in order to develop and heighten their aesthetic sensibilities. Students will also be exposed to the vocabulary of art through immersion in intensive study and practice. This course provides a fundamental foundation for all other artistic pursuits.

Life Drawing

This course is designed for students with some prior drawing experience. We will explore the principles and structures of the human body, utilizing pencil, charcoal, ink, and conte crayon. You'll practice drawing from live models in class, with a focus on proportion, weight, contour drawing, principles of movement & form. Learn to look “beyond the surface" and acquire an understanding of bone structure and muscle. This course is designed to help you see the beauty of the human body.Group work and critiques will be included.

Careers in Art *NEW*

This course is designed for students curious about pursuing a career in art. Students can choose from topics including Graphic Design, Architecture, Illustration, and Industrial Design. Students will learn about and complete projects common to the profession to gain a better understanding of what a career in the field would be like. The course also includes the use of art vocabulary specific to each profession. Classes will feature a presentation from a local professional in the field who will answer questions and provide guidance.

Beginning Architectural Exploration

This class focuses on construction and design of architectural buildings and forms. Students will experience turning their imaginative ideas into artistic architectural designs. Students will study the work of influential architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Antoni Gaudi and Frank Gehry. Instruction in perspective drawing is included to provide students with the ability to draw convincing 3-Dimensional drawings. The course also includes instruction and practice in 3-Dimensional design through the use of a variety of sculptural materials.
